Main Objectives

The Institution Library serves as the academic information centre of the CAT College. Through our library services we safeguard the scientific literature supply for learning, teaching and research. The Institution Library is a central institution of the College. It consists of 50 to 100 recommended Textbooks in library as per three learners one text Book responsible for the literature supply of 100 students, 10 staff members, we employ 2 permanent library staff members. Our main objectives for the next five years will be the creation and further development of an efficient, multimedia-based and user-oriented library which offers a broad variety of innovative services, modern library facilities with state-of-the-art technical equipment and a differentiated portfolio of conventional and electronic media with decentralized access. By reflecting the growing importance of electronic resources we aim at offering staff and students a greater flexibility and a faster and more comprehensive access to information and library collections, which is indispensable for any academic institution. As a study, research, communication and intellectual space the library will ensure an inspiring and optimal working environment for students, staff and all other users. The CAT College Library started operations in 2009 including organizational management, In the past two years we were able to realize important steps towards our goals:

Internal reorganization

• Standardization of working processes and centralization of organizational structures
• Team-orientation
• Implementation of efficient communication structures
• Organization of an internal training programme for library staff members
• Development of a library mission statement2

Implementation of unified, transparent library rules

• Development and implementation of a modern, efficient library rules
• Evaluation of the library statute 18 months after its implementation

Reform of the financing system

• Development and adoption of a new budget model for the distribution of funds within the Institution
• Institution allocated R75000 to R100000 Per year for next 5 Years to improve Library facilities.

Collection maintenance, acquisition & cataloguing achievements

• complete conversion of all conventional catalogue data to electronic catalogue entries
• Centralization of acquisition and cataloguing of journals

Improved library facilities and IT infrastructure

• Planning, realization and opening of new library for engineering and bringing more journals
• Renovation and remodeling of the Library on the main campus by 2012
• Creation of resource center for students in main branch library by November 2011
• Migration of the online catalogue to the information portal system Info Guide by 2012
• Migration of CD-ROM databases to a central server hosted by the PRIYA Library Network

Enhanced library services

Equipment of Library resource Center with 10 modern computers by 2012
• Implementation of a collaboration system with local Public Libraries
• Implementation of an internal document delivery service for journal articles
• Development of new information materials and tutorials for library users
• Extension of opening hours until 6:00PM and on weekends 8AM – 1PM
• Launch of the library website
• Implementation of a configuration-free, location-independent access to the library’s eJournals and eBooks collection for
  CAT students and staff via WEB
• Implementation of the CAT Student Card which can also be used in the library for lending, computer login and photocopying
